BlackHat – The Final Review

BlackHat 2017 was one for the record books. Record attendance by the media, record attendance by security researchers from more than 80 countries around the world, and record attendance by the vendors fBlackhat Las Vegas 2017 20th Yearrom the security sector. I even spoke to the FBI and Dept of Homeland Security that had booths at the event actively recruiting security practitioners. Hell, I remember the old days where the feds and others would come, but just dress like everyone else and try to go unnoticed. This year was the 20th anniversary year and the presentations, whitepapers and demonstrations were bigger and scarier than ever. The methods that your data can be compromised seem to double every year, and the attack vectors get even more creative as you go. As an 18 year veteran of the IT field, and 9 year veteran of the security sector, it is amazing how much things have changed. If you don’t stay current, you sure as hell get behind quickly.

During this year’s event, I also showed up as media on behalf of my show Dave The IT Guy on IHeartRadio. I had the chance to meet hundreds, and interview some, as well as scheduling interviews for long term. If you check out the column to the right you’ll find my interviews under the Spreaker tab. You can also go to and find me there, or download the app and search “Dave The IT Guy”. You can hear me live on Wednesday from 6-7pm Eastern Time Zone.  Check out some of the conversations already and stay tuned as more are being lined up for each week.
